The capital, Horta, is a regular meeting point for yachts crossing the Atlantic.
In the centre of the island is a volcanic crater, about 1 mile in diameter, which has the luxuriant vegetation that used to cover the islands.

The main town, Horta, has a famous yacht harbour and in the town can be seen beautiful tiles and gilded carvings in the 17th and 18th century churches of São Salvador, Nossa Senhora do Carmo and São Francisco.
Places to visit include the Sacred Art Museum, Nossa Senhora das Angústias Church, Nossa Senhora do Pilar Chapel, Império dos Nobres and Porto Pim fortifications.
Also the Caldeira Natural Reserve, Capelinhos, the grottoes and caves in Costa da Feteira and Monte da Guia belvedere.
