Village houses restored for tourism
Aldeia da Cuada, Flores Island, Faja Grande, AzoresAldeia da Cuada.
Being on the route of the sailing ships crossing the Atlantic, many people from the Azores left their homes on the islands to go to North America. This emigration reached its highest numbers in the 1960's

As a result many of the villages became almost deserted with only inhabitants being elderly.

One such village was Cuada on the west coast of Flores where most of the houses were abandoned and motor vehicles had never arrived.

To remember this old traditional way of life, which encouraged many to emigrate, the houses have been rebuilt in the original style, however the modern tourist also has the modern amenities unavailable previously.

Ten houses have been restored with some having two bedrooms and others with one bedroom. All have a modern kitchen and bathroom, and the bedrooms are large.

The restoration of the village as been recognized in the recent classification as being of cultural, historical and architectural significance.>

Aldeia da Cuada is two kilometres from the sea, and the village of Faja Grande. There you can swim in the sea, or a good meal on the terrace of the local restaurant.
