Europe's most westerly point, this island is considered to be the
prettiest in the Azores.
The capital, Santa Cruz, has an interesting museum and several historic monuments. In the centre of the island are seven lakes that are worth visiting - especially when the hydrangeas are in bloom. |

In Santa Cruz, the main town, you will find manors, the churches of São Boaventura (Baroque) and Nossa Senhora da Conceição (19th century) and the Ethnographic Museum.
Trips to Ribeira Grande Waterfall, to the Gruta dos Enxaréus (by boat) and to Lagoas (seven lakes surrounded by flowers) are suggested. |
