The name "Quinta do Martelo" translates as the 'farm of the hammer' and is taken from the 18th century knocker that still adorns the front gate.

The family became rich and built the house when the Azorean oranges became popular in Europe. This occurred after the islands' discovery by the Portuguese. To be acceptable to the people of northern Europe they were often sold a as a Japanese product!

Quinta do Martelo is classified by the Azorean Government as an area of great tourist interest. The old rural atmosphere of Terceira has been maintained in its buildings, working practices, customs, food and festive events.

The atmosphere of the quinta reflects that of a family home that has been occupied throughout the past two centuries.

There are ten guest bedrooms of which 5 are double rooms and 5 are for single occupancy. All but two room have en-suite facilities.

All the rooms have private bathrooms.

Each tastefully decorated bedroom has different traditional furniture that has been made on the island over the last two centuries.

Guests have the use of the lounge, dining room and the kitchen.

The every day life of a rural homestead has been thoughtfully maintained and. throughout the year guests can take pleasure in seeing life as lived in former years.

You will be welcome to join the owners in the life of the farm and also to enjoy the arts, crafts and cultural activities that take place on the farm and on the island.

The enjoyment of the local wine and food is particularly pleasurable for those staying at the farm.

The facilities of the house include swimming pool, tennis, mini golf, sauna, gymnasium, snooker, traditional games, cable television and video.

There is a barbecue and outdoor eating area, and restaurant service which is available for guests on prior request.

Included in the price of the rooms is the use of a rental car (clients pay for the fuel used) which will be available for collection at the airport on arrival in the island.

A tour to the wild interior of the island can be arranged in an off road vehicle.

The quinta is situated five kilometres from the capital of the island, Angra do Heroismo,

This city has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is twenty five kilometres from the airport and two and a half kilometres from the beach.
