With 58,000 inhabitants, Terceira is the second most populated island in the Azores.
The civilian airport at Lages also serves as an important NATO base.
Angra do Heroísmo is the capital and the main port of the island.
It had major strategic significance during the period of the great Portuguese maritime discoveries.
In 1983 the central area of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.
A geological reserve in the centre of the island has underground grottoes and lakes.

The historic centre of the capital of Terceira, Angra do Heroísmo, has been classified by UNESCO as worthy of inclusion in the International Heritage list.
Special reference is made to the forts of São Sebastião and São João Baptista (16th-17th-centuries).
Also the palaces of the Bettencourts (Baroque) and of the Capitães-Generais; the Cathedral, which has a silver altar front and treasure; the churches of Colégio dos Jesuítas, São Gonçalo and Nossa Senhora da Conceição (17th-century); the churches of Misericórdia and also the 18th-century church of Nossa Senhora da Guia in which is the Angra Museum.
Other points of interest are: Praia da Vitória, Santa Bárbara, São Sebastião and Vila Nova.
